What is a Missionary Associate?

The Missionary Associate program of Assemblies of God World Missions is designed to link people gifted in various vocations with ministries overseas that urgently need their help. Experience is always helpful, but not necessarily required. A Missionary Associate can play a vital role in ministry by volunteering one to two years to assist an experienced missionary as a:

  • teacher
  • secretary
  • medical professional
  • children's worker
  • librarian
  • computer technician
  • maintenance worker
  • church worker
  • artist
  • carpenter
  • houseparent
  • accountant
  • editorial assistant
  • graphic designer
  • music director
  • youth worker
  • radio/TV technician
  • writer

Who can benefit from becoming a Missionary Associate?

Using their unique gifts and abilities, Missionary Associates help veteran missionariesby sharing the workload on the field. This enables missionaries to devote more time to preaching and discipling believers, rather than trying to fill every need alone.

The Missionary Associate program offers valuable opportunities for ministry to people in these categories:

  1. Those who have a heart for missions but may lack Bible school training or are not licensed ministers.
  2. Those who sense God calling them to missionary ministry for only a short period of time.
  3. Those who are considering a career in missions and want an exposure to life and ministry overseas.

What are the qualifications of a Missionary Associate?

A missionary associate must be:

  • a born-again Christian.
  • baptized in the Holy Spirit according to acts 2:4
  • faithful to a local Assemblies of God church.
  • consistent in personal devotion.
  • financially responsible, with a minimum indebtedness.

How do I become a Missionary Associate?

First, contact the Personnel and Family Life Department of the Assemblies of God World Missions and request an application. The approval process will require three to six months after the application is returned. During that time your skills and vocational background will be matched to a specific need on the field, and a missionary mentor will be assigned.

After final approval is granted, you will be invited to an orientation in Springfield, Missouri, and given a monthly pledge budget and a one-time cash budget to raise before leaving for the field.

The amount of the required monthly pledge budget will vary according to the country to which you are assigned. Missionary associates can raise their budget with help from friends, family or home church. However, itineration from church to church is not allowed.
